Birthday at the Foot of Mt Paektu
A few days after the auspicious February holiday in 2002, some officials received the call of Chairman Kim Jong Il. To their surprise, where they were wanted was the foot of Mt Paektu, thousands of ri far away from the capital.
Exchanging warm greetings with the officials, the Chairman said that he called them to have a talk, now that they must have been feeling regrettable for his field inspection in the Mt Paektu area instead of enjoying his birthday.
He continued:
Although our people and comrades were going to celebrate the coming February 16 in an auspicious way, I instructed not to organize any great national events if possible as I wanted the people to have a good rest. I have been working here for a few days without informing anybody as I thought the officials would be solicitous for my birthday if I stayed in Pyongyang.
The officials, who were struggling to repress their emotion, eventually shed tears.
Everyone in the world enjoys their birthdays amid the blessing of family members, relatives and friends. However, the Chairman was on a field inspection in the blizzards of the Mt Paektu area, courteously refusing the earnest request of all the people and service personnel of the Korean People’s Army, who sincerely wished him to enjoy even a single day―February 16 of that year, his 60th birthday.
Indeed, the immeasurably humble personality of the great Chairman was just like that of President Kim Il Sung, who was always on the road of on-the-spot guidance while letting people enjoy the holiday of April amid singing and dancing and the sea of flowers every year.
